Disney to leave Netflix and launch its own streaming service
The announcement was made last Tuesday. Disney will leave Netflix in 2019. The decision responds to a change in strategy that will culminate with the launch of Disney’s own streaming service which will become the only platform to stream Disney and Pixar’s live action and animated movies.
Since September 2016, Netflix was the only subscription streaming service to Disney’s movies. But in 2019 this relationship will end. Disney will leave Netflix and start a new adventure on its own.
Netflix confirmed that they will be able to keep Lucasfilm and Marvel, though. Netflix has also been trying to produce more original content, but in children’s entertainment the break up with Disney might be a threat.
This is more so considering that Netflix has to compete with other companies streaming children’s content. Amazon streams for Nickelodeon exclusively. And Sesame Street has recently been bought by Netflix’x most direct competitor: HBO.
Why has Disney made this decision? The company is ready to get rid of intermediaries. According to their statement. “Direct relationship between creators and consumers will define the future of entertainment”.
Part of Disney’s statement goes like this:
“The new Disney-branded service will become the exclusive home in the U.S. for subscription-video-on-demand viewing of the newest live action and animated movies from Disney and Pixar, beginning with the 2019 theatrical slate. This includes Toy Story 4, the sequel to Frozen, and The Lion King from Disney live-action, along with other highly anticipated movies.
Disney will also make a significant investment in an annual slate of original movies, TV shows, short-form content and other Disney-branded exclusives for the service. Additionally, the service will feature a vast collection of library content. Including Disney and Pixar movies and Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD television programming.”
From 2019 there will be one more rival fighting for the streaming of children’s content. And it’s not just any rival. It’s Hollywood’s biggest studio.
