Robert Baratheon predicted last epic battle in Game of Thrones
This week’s GoT episode is probably one of the most epic ones ever. But it’s even more shocking to know we should have seen it coming all along. Back in season 1, Robert Baratheon predicted last epic battle in Game of Thrones . Had we only paid a little more attention…
Back in season 1 Robert Baratheon was sitting on the Iron Throne. Most of the time he was drunk or out hunting. But he was not a stupid man. And certainly knew his enemies.
Although he and his allies ended the Targaryen’s rule, Robert knew his enemies were not to be underestimated. In season 1, episode 5, the king spoke to his wife Cersei about how a Targaryen attack might take place.
First, Robert Baratheon predicted the Dothraki battle against the Lannister troops. Or more accurately, he predicted the Lannister’s terrible defeat by Daenerys’ horse-mounted warriors.
The king’s words were these: “Only a fool would meet the Dothraki in an open field”.
That’s exactly what Jaime and the Lannister’s troops did in the last episode, “The Spoils of War”. They fought the Dothrakis in an open field. And as king Baratheon predicted, they lost.
It’s true Robert was talking about Viserys, for in season 1 he could never imagine Daenerys would become queen. But the rest of his vision perfectly meets what happened in the last episode.
Throughout season 7 we’re watching Tyrion and the rest of Daenerys’ team tell their queen that the use of force against the people is not the best of ideas. Instead, they tell her to patiently await her moment and besiege King’s Landing until the capital is forced to surrender.
And back in season 1 Robert knew that was what would happen. His talk with Cersei goes as follows:
“Let’s say Viserys Targaryen lands with 40,000 Dothraki screamers at his back. We hole up in our castles. A wise move. Only a fool would meet the Dothraki in an open field”.
They leave us in our castles. They go from town to town, looting and burning, killing every man who can’t hide behind a stone wall, stealing all our crops and livestock, enslaving all our women and children.
How long do the people of the Seven Kingdoms stand behind their absentee king, their cowardly king hiding behind high walls? When do the people decide that Viserys Targaryen is the rightful monarch after all?”
Except for the dragons (minor detail, huh?), Robert predicted Daenerys’ victory. And it was the best battle in Game of Thrones ever.
